Baltimore Beer Week Opening Ceremonies!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

So I weaseled my way onto the USS Constellation for the opening ceremonies for Baltimore Beer Week (#BBW09 for all of you looking for the hashtag), and got some video footage of the cask tapping.

It was a great night. I got to meet a ton of folks in the industry, and I got to hang with Brad from Beer In Baltimore, and Sandy from the other Beer in Baltimore.

We also started handing out some BaltiBrew cards.

Check out the video I shot — admittedly my first attempt at online video uploads.

Almost Hammer Time! errrr… Mallet Time!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Tomorrow opens the inaugural Baltimore Beer Week. The festivities begin on the USS Constellation in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Local Orioles hero Boog Powell will tap a cask on the deck of the ship using the  mallet you see on this post — expertly crafted by my friend John Gasparine.

After the ceremony, I’m heading to Pratt St. Ale House for some of the opening festivities. Plenty of other stuff to check out on Thursday, and for the entire ten days of the “week.”

BBW Interviews

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Brad from Beer In Baltimore and I sat down with the Baltimore Beer Week organizers to get the scoop on what the event is really all about. Beer Guru about town, and BBW action man Joe Gold, Volker Stewart of the Brewer’s Art, and Rob Kasper of Kasper On Tap gave us their time last Thursday to go over some of what’s coming, what the impetus for the week was, and what the landscape of Baltimore beer was like before and what it could be in the future.

It was great getting to finally meet all of these guys, and if BBW is an even bigger opportunity for this kind of interaction, I can only say that I can’t wait.

Brad and I will have that interview up as a podcast soon, but in the meantime let me just say that BBW will be an amazing event far beyond the humble beginnings that most first year events turn out to be. And as Brad said in his own post, the best part of what we got to hear was the stories these guys shared with us about Baltimore, beer and some of the history we missed.

IBIV + events & news

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

So as I mentioned a while ago, I wrote a proposal for Ignite Baltimore IV. I found out Monday that it has been accepted. Time to start working on the slides.

I get five minutes and twenty slides to juxtapose brewing as a real synthesis of creativity and analysis, and also describe how such a synthesis is beneficial in all sorts of things, particularly entrepreneurship.

In other news, Max’s is holding its second annual German Beer Fest this weekend. I spoke on Tuesday night with cellarmaster, Casey Hard as he was changing out taps to accommodate all the beers they’ll be serving up, and I expect the offerings to be excellent.

Wootown is brewing on Saturday, and the Zymurnauts Crab Feast will also be going on.

I’ll have some new posts up for you shortly. Working on the mashing series, which should be pretty intense as well as a few other things — a joint interview with the founders of Baltimore Beer Week done in conjunction with Brad from Beer in Baltimore.

Beer Weeks!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

They’re cropping up in a whole bunch of cities. The most prominent one I can think of has been Philly’s annual event, which was this past March and I didn’t manage to get to. DC’s is this week, and our own fair city’s Baltimore Beer “Week” goes off for its inaugural run this October 8th, and lasts ten days (thus the quotes around week.)

I will unfortunately be unable to make any of DC’s events, but my friend Stefin Clapham has said he’ll at least tell me what beers were good — if he can remember.

Baltimore’s is sure to be interesting enough that I’ll probably live-tweet as much of it as I can, so look forward to that if you’re glued to your phone like most of us seem to be these days. I’m excited
