Well, I got three entries which isn’t too bad. A number of blogger friends warned me that I’d be lucky to get one response based on their past experiences. Three seems like an acceptable enough number to me. First Stater’s mild, Ben’s Kitchen Sink beer, and Stefin’s Surfer Kitten —two of which are posted to the comments, and Stefin’s will get put into a new section along with the other two specifically for recipes.
But the winner is First Stater, and here’s why:
While Ben’s recipe is technically sound, incredibly original, and I’m sure ultimately very tasty, I doubt I’d drink 5 gallons of it! I actually enjoy Brett beers quite a bit, but until I have a bit more cellar space, I don’t know if I could store it for as long as I’d like to.
Stefin’s Surfer Kitty is a great recipe for a California Common, or traditional Steam, but it’s one I’ve done myself a few times in the past. But I was looking for something more rich, but not necessarily bigger.
So First Stater’s historical British Mild really stood out to me. Not only is the style one I enjoy, but the instructions in the recipe — like Ben’s — go a couple steps further than what you get from Beersmith or ProMash. Being specific enough to mention that the mash tun should be preheated is an excellent touch, and something a lot of people forget about.
Being that I only received three entries, and being that I want to encourage you readers out there to consider entering in future contests, I’m awarding all three entries with SYD Year One mugs, but I will be brewing First Stater’s Historical British Mild — though I’ll probably try all of these recipes out at some point. I’m still working out the design of the mug, but I’ll post pics here soon enough.
Thanks for your entries, fellas and hope to see more in the coming years!

I’d love to come down to Baltimore for a brew session. Hopefully you will teach me a thing or 2. I’ll bring along some homebrew for after the flame goes out.
Cheers,
First Stater
Sounds good to me!
Dude! Contests can catch on. Last year was the first year of my BS Homebrew Contest (see http://www.benbrew.com/bs.html ). I got a grand total of 4 entries from 3 people. I wasn’t going to do it this year, but someone told me to try it one more time, so I did. So far I’ve collected 10 entries, and I supposedly have 2 more coming at next week’s CRABS meeting. A little more word-of-mouth will help. Remind me next year and I will broadcast your message to all my clubs.
Meanwhile I have to come up with a new recipe for next year.
Awesome! Thanks, Ben.
I still have to get you an entry since I didn’t make the Guild Meeting on Monday.
I got robbed!
Whoops! I totally forgot I was going to send you the recipe for that Vanilla Stout you tried at Baltibrew on Sunday. Oh well, that’s what happens when you continually put it off. Congrats on getting three entries for the first time out!
